Kyushu University celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2011. Kyushu University with its hundred-year tradition aims to carve out a new era of knowledge for another hundred years as one of the world-leading Center of Excellence by actively engaging in a variety of fields such as education, research and medical practice.

In the field of research, Kyushu University, with sincere respect for the long tradition of the pursuit of truth by mankind and for the human wisdom realized therein, shall carry out its mission of handing down this basic attitude to future generations. The University shall also recognize its role as an institution of producing the most progressive and world-renowned knowledge by developing perspectives from the basic researches in the various fields of culture and science.

As one of the examples of such research activities, in August 2007, Kyushu University established Innovation Center for Medical Redox Navigation with a proposal of "Formulation of Advanced Collaborative Medical Innovation Center" as a project supported by Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology to create synergy effects by both academia and industry as well as to give research achievements back to a community efficiently. Furthermore, in 2009, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology narrowed down the number of their projects from thirteen to five to support more intensively, and Innovation Center for Medical Redox Navigation was chosen as one of the continuing projects for another seven years.

Redox-reaction (a compound noun for "Reduction & Oxidation"), referred to as a principal axiom of biological phenomenon, is known to be active for a variety of environmental changes or insalubrious lifestyle habits. Innovation Center for Medical Redox Navigation prevents its unusual biological redox-reaction, administers proper curative medicines, and promotes consistent experimental procedure. In the result, the Center advances a particular social linkage between Kyushu University and cooperative industries as partners.

To conduct true cooperative researches, the University has to overcome communication barriers among departments within the University and government, industry and academia. Then, since Innovation Center for Medical Redox Navigation was established in 2007, the Center secured designated area of 1,000 m2 on the 5th floor of West-wing building within the site of Kyushu University Hospital for its activities, hired researchers and professional staff, revised relevant regulations, enacted new IP management processes, and established a system where government, industry and academia can smoothly cooperate together with their researches. Additionally in 2010, the University provided the Center with another 1,000 m2 area on the 6th floor of West-Wing building to expand its basic facility.

Moreover, Innovation Center for Medical Redox has welcomed three other industries as a cooperative group to accelerate feedbacks of research achievements to clinical practice and a community.
