Drug Delivery System Group

Our research group aims to develop an innovative drug delivery system (DDS) for clinical application of novel treatment and diagnosis. A principal concept of DDS is to enable adequate drug dose to be delivered to affected parts of body for the time required to work, which makes it possible to develop new medication based on genes, nucleotides or other bioactive agents. Our group applies two major projects in collaboration with NOF Corporation: (1) clinical trial for novel cancer gene therapy targeted to redox-related molecules using non-viral carrier: polymeric micelles, (2) development of basic technologies for next generation of DDS, such as disease state-dependent controlled release, active targeting, enhanced permeability through bio-barriers, and promotion of retention in the affected sites.

NOF is a leading company to develop and produce polyethylene glycol (PEG) and phospholipid under GMP operation as materials for DDS. NOF takes on two important roles in the projects: (1) establishing the GMP production of polymeric micelles for gene therapy in our clinical trial, (2) screening of DDS materials for disease state-dependent controlled release and active targeting.

We believe that the outcomes of our projects will achieve not only the creation of nanotechnologies in medical science but also the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.
