Redox-Navigation and Endoscopic Surgery

Endoscopic surgery has been developed all over the world due to less invasiveness and earlier recovery to normal work. However, there are still some technical difficulties in movement of the instruments or limitation of operative field by endoscopy. One of the breakthroughs in those technical difficulties would be an easier access to the real time, on-demand information system. The information would include the anatomical structure, exact location of the targeting area characteristics of disease. To diagnose the extent and structure, exact location of the targeting area, or characteristics of the diseased part, it is important to detect changing the cellular signals based on the disease.

Ever since the suggestion of a relationship between reactive oxygen species and disease, the measurement of biological free radicals and redox states has been popular research topic. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and imaging techniques using spin probe reagent can be used to measure these radicals capable of providing non-invasive measurements of these parameters in vivo. The aim of our research is to combine ESR imaging system with endoscopic surgery. This system provides subtle differences in redox be realized as an image which is intuitively understood by operator. ESR-guided surgery is the next generation to the conventional minimally invasive surgery.
